An extremely rare dichalkon from Mothone

MESSENIA. Mothone. Circa 450-425 BC. Dichalkon (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.47 g, 11 h). Hepaistos running right, wearing pileos and holding torch in his left hand. Rev. MO within shallow circular incuse. BCD Peloponnesos 803. HGC 5, 601. SNG Copenhagen 537. Extremely rare. Slightly rough and with some deposits, otherwise, good fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.


Mothone was located at the southwestern tip of Messenia, a helot region on the southwestern Peloponnese that remained under Spartan control for centuries. The city minted very few coins, all of which are now extremely rare.
